What Is Stainless Steel Mesh?
Stainless steel mesh (also called stainless steel wire mesh or stainless steel cloth) is an ideal filter medium when precise retention, excellent corrosion resistance, and long service life are required. It offers problem-free screening, is easily cleanable, and maintains dimensional stability under heat and load.
- Filtration grade: from 3 μm up to 10 mm (micron-level to coarse screening).
- Fineness: space wire weaves can be produced down to about 5 μm aperture.
- Weave options: plain weave, twill weave, Dutch weaves (plain/twill/reverse), and five-heddle.
- Cleanability: products can be supplied ultrasonically cleaned on request.

Weave Choices & Performance
Choosing the right weave is central to how a stainless steel mesh performs—its flow rate, dirt-holding capacity, surface finish, and mechanical strength—while complementary finishes like powder coating on surrounding frames or guards can reduce glare, provide color coding, and protect carbon-steel supports.
1) Square/Rectangular Mesh (Plain or Twill)
- Range: 1–635 mesh/inch (square openings common for screening and general filtration).
- Wire diameter: approx. 0.0008″–0.08″ (0.02–2.03 mm).
- Open area: approx. 25%–84.6% across the series.
- Weight: approx. 2.53–41.1 lb per 100 sq ft, depending on mesh and diameter.
2) Dutch Weaves (Fine Filtration)
For micron-level retention with high mechanical integrity, select Dutch weaves:
| Weave Type | Typical Mesh (warp × weft) | Wire Diameter (warp × weft) | Absolute Filtration (μm) | Nominal Filtration (μm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain Dutch Weave | 8 × 85 — 80 × 400 | 0.014″ × 0.0126″ — 0.0049″ × 0.0028″ | ~318–340 → ~43–48 | ~250–255 → ~35–40 |
| Twill Dutch Weave | 20 × 250 — 500 × 3200 | 0.0098″ × 0.0079″ — 0.0015″ × 0.0010″ | ~110–120 → ~8–9 | ~98–105 → ~2–3 |
Note: Ranges above represent typical capability envelopes across the family; specific items are defined by a single mesh count, wire size, and verified retention value.
